Glow foods… Foods that Glow? Am I talking about the nuclear candy that you find in the confectionary aisle of you local supermarket?
You know the ones. When your child picks them up and asks “Can I have this iridescent green lollypop that paints my tongue ultramarine blue?” you have visions of children turning into little monsters that climb your walls, terrorise small animals and turn yourself into a hyperventilating mess from the shock of it all.
Nope-not those. In fact I’m talking about the furthest from it.
I’m talking about a special chemical concoction that makes women (and men) glow from the inside out.
It makes her skin smooth, her eyes clear, her hair soft, and her energy radiate. And, at any age!
“Where can I get some of that?” you eagerly enquire.
Well, it’s not in the cosmetic aisle or in the supplement section of your health food store. It’s found at your local produce store.
And they look a little something like this…
But you said chemicals didn’t you?
In each plant we find a variety of phytochemicals. ‘Phyto’ means plant and ‘chemical’ means that it has a predictable composition and characteristic. And it’s these characteristics, these compounds that create a reaction, an explosion of life giving support for your body.
Each plant has a different blend of phytochemicals. Some have hundreds of them squeezed into their tiny little cells and every phytochemical has a reason for being there. They may have therapeutic benign functions like producing colour or smell however it is estimated that there is a staggering amount of phytochemicals that are advantageous for our health and well being. With estimates up around the 4 thousand mark.
Wow! 4000 different phytochemicals all designed to make you glow!
I find that amazing, don’t you?
All across the world right now research is being conducted around the benefit of specific phytochemicals. Well known examples include;
Resveratrol from grapeseed or red wine
- Lycopene from tomatoes
- EGCG from green tea
I’ll look more at specific phytochemicals in later posts but for the meantime let’s look at what other goodness is jam packed into these foods.
C, E, A, niacin, magnesium, folate, selenium.. the list goes on and on. These vital nutrients are absolutely essential to life and play a crucial part in the restoration and maintenance of a healthy mind and body. They have many functions in your body which include; antioxidant, regulator, cofactor, catalyst, and hormone to name just a few.
Without an abundance of glow foods on your plate your nutrient status can become depleted, your metabolism sluggish, and your mind and body fatigued… Not the glowing picture we all aim for.
Vegetables, fruit and other plants have the capacity to help our body heal and restore the natural balance of your being. No matter what diet fad is popular today or any day these foods are the backbone of every good food program.
All you’ve got to do is get them on your fork!
